Marc Newson redesigns Louis Vuitton cases

Industrial designer Marc Newson has once again collaborated with Louis Vuitton, this time to create a line of luggage fit for the 21st century traveller.

Building on the brand’s heritage — Louis Vuitton launched its first packing trunk in 1858, thus creating the concept of “modern” luggage, Newson set about updating the classic design by utilising the latest modern materials.

The designer was able to free up an additional 15 per cent of internal space by opting to mould the trunk from a lightweight, durable polypropylene composite material. The change reduces the case’s weight and places the workings of the retractable handles outside the case, making this an ideal carrier for regular business travellers.

Not losing sight of the Vuitton heritage, however, some elements remain unchanged. The reinforced leather corners, for example, are still prevalent, while the trunks feature the iconic Vuitton monogram canvas, the Damier graphite finish, as well as seven vivid colours of Epi leather. If that is not luxurious enough, 2017 will see the launch of a laser engraved monogram version.

This is Newson’s second collaboration with the fashion house. In 2014, he reimagined the iconic monogram leather of Vuitton into a playful backpack, complete with bright orange sheepskin patches.

In addition to the launch of the new luggage, Louis Vuitton is offering a 48-hour repair service, available in 14 cities across the globe. True Vuitton aficionados might also consider installing the Vuitton travel app, launched November 2015, on their phones, to access to the brand’s city guides in digital form.

Rolling Trunks designed by Marc Newson for Louis Vuitton are available now in Louis Vuitton stores across the UAE.

How it works

Each player begins with one of the great empires of history, from Julius Caesar's Rome to Ramses of Egypt, spread over Europe and the Middle East.

Round by round, the player expands their empire. The more land they have, the more money they can take from their coffers for each go.

As unruled land and soldiers are acquired, players must feed them. When a player comes up against land held by another army, they can choose to battle for supremacy.

A dice-based battle system is used and players can get the edge on their enemy with by deploying a renowned hero on the battlefield.

Players that lose battles and land will find their coffers dwindle and troops go hungry. The end goal? Global domination of course.
