Bezalel Smotrich, Israel's far-right Finance Minister, said on Thursday that the government would promote West Bank settlements and punitive measures against the Palestinian Authority in response to Palestinian moves against Israel on the international stage.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has extended a waiver that allows co-operation between its banking system and Palestinian banks in the occupied West Bank, the minister's representative said on Sunday.

The waiver, which was scheduled to expire at the end of June, allows Israeli banks to process shekel payments for services and salaries tied to the Palestinian Authority. Without it, the Palestinian economy would have taken a hit.

Mr Smotrich extended the waiver during a recent cabinet meeting.

The Palestinian economy relies heavily on this relationship to process transactions made in Israeli shekels.
