Developing and implementing environmental legislation is one of six key priority areas for the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi in 2012.
"As Abu Dhabi continues to develop, it is critical that we have a strong and effective environmental regulatory framework, with a clear strategy focused on tackling the big issues in partnership with other relevant organizations," said Razan Al Mubarak, secretary general of the agency. "This will help ensure that economic growth provides the desired benefits without damaging Abu Dhabi's natural heritage and long-term future prospects."
The agency will also focus on conserving groundwater and protecting biodiversity. Air quality and climate change will also be important areas, as will promoting sustainable communities.
The emirate's plans to join the club of developed countries within the short span of 20 years will potentially harm the environment, but if environmental concerns are taken into account early on, balance can be achieved, Ms Al Mubarak said.
"In 2012, the agency will continue to play an effective part in bringing the environment to the forefront of policy and decision making, and this demands the forging of effective partnerships and being forward-looking as an organisation," she said. "While we have achieved a great deal, we recognise that much more work remains."
