Mixed views about cost of World Cup coverage in UAE

I refer to comments about the television coverage of the World Cup (UAE fans complain about scramble signal on BeIn Sports, June 11).

The rights to show this event were put up for sale by Fifa and no matter whoever won those rights, they would have needed to recoup their money.

That’s business. If you must blame anyone, then blame Fifa for selling the TV rights.

Aziza Al Busaidy, from where

In the United States, ESPN does not “upsell” subscribers.

It makes its money from paid advertisement and growing its customer base.

Rick Hood, Abu Dhabi

Advertising makes money for broadcasters all over the world. They don’t make it by charging extra for a substandard service.

Games could be left up in the air

I was pleased to read Etihad Airways to show every World Cup match live in the air (June 12), but I do see a problem.

Just imagine it’s the 80th minute and the pilot puts announces that the plane is landing – and all the televisions are turned off.

The Force is with Saadiyat museum

I was pleased to read about plans for a Star Wars sets and props museum in Abu Dhabi (Episode VII sets likely to be preserved on Saadiyat Island, June 11).

It will most likely get more visitors than the Louvre.

N Ablett, Ras al Khaima

I hope this happens. It will be somewhere special to visit.

No passport woe for these Britons

I did not share the experience of the people quoted in Expatriate Britons fear for holiday plans as passport office struggles to process applications (June 11).

I found the service in Dusseldorf to be really quick. My family received our passports in under three weeks.

Miles Trethewey, Fujarah

My passport renewal was done at the end of last year. I sent it back to the UK and it took one week to be returned.

Malls’ Monopoly idea applauded

I refer to Life-size Monopoly with cash prizes comes to three Dubai malls (June 12).

What a fabulous idea. Having spent Dh300 on something you wanted at the malls, you then get a chance to win a prize by participating in a life-size version of Monopoly.

Workers struggle in midday heat

Why are there still groups of workers struggling along in the 1pm heat?

On two days last week, when the temperatures were 48 degrees in Al Ain, I drove past two groups of labourers who were hard at work at a time when the law dictates that they should have been in a shaded rest area.

One such group was erecting a traffic sign, just down from the Civic Centre. The second group of men were attending the flowers along the median strip in the Hili district.

I don’t know who they were working for, but they should not have been outdoors in the hottest part of the day.

Returning doctors are helping India

Your story Brain regain in India as medical tourism booms (June 13) was a pleasure to read.

The south Indian state of Chennai has always been known for its medical infrastructure and quality of treatment, so it is pleasing that doctors who have been living abroad are now returning there to offer their services.

The fact that people from other South Asian countries and the Middle East are visiting Chennai for medical treatment is important to the Indian economy.

A lack of air-conis nothing new

Dozens of Abu Dhabi families 'without air-conditioning for two weeks' (June 10) caught my attention.

I understand the heat problems in the UAE.

However, I do wonder how people lived in this area before air-conditioning was invented.
